India Capable of Creating Its Own AI Foundational Models: Google India Research Head Manish Gupta

Bengaluru: Disagreeing with Nandan Nilekani's assertion that India cannot create its own foundational models in the AI domain, Manish Gupta, Head of Google Research India, expressed confidence in the country's capabilities.


Speaking at a session on "AI: Reality vs Hype" at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 24 on Tuesday, he stated that India is fully capable of developing its own foundational AI models.


Gupta highlighted that while there are currently misconceptions and significant hype surrounding AI, many of these advancements will eventually become a reality. He emphasised the world-class expertise of the Google India Research team, which he described as one of the best globally, and noted that the ongoing research there is transformative in nature.


Adding to the discussion, Prof. Ganesh Bagler from the Infosys Centre for Artificial Intelligence at IIITD remarked that AI will not lead to job losses but instead create new opportunities. He predicted that within the next five years, AI could achieve an intelligence level comparable to that of Einstein.


Pragya Misra, Public Policy and Partnerships Lead for India at OpenAI's Global Affairs division, shared insights on the growing adoption of AI in smaller cities. She pointed out that second- and third-tier cities in India are likely to witness rapid growth in AI usage in the coming years. AI adoption would increase productivity by about 30%, She added.
